| EXTREME TALKING POINT | ~ The Wii U Without the Gamepad? Um, No!

"Get rid of this? Not a chance."

Some share the very same sentiments about the Wii U's Gamepad controller.

"It's a pointless gimmick."
"It's unncessary."
"It's clunky. "
"Nintendo needs to get rid of the Gamepad and release the Wii U with the Pro Controller."

I've seen those sentiments around a lot of places. IGN, N4G, YouTube, even pro-Nintendo sites like My Nintendo News and Wii U Daily. Many people agree that Nintendo should go ahead and scrap the Gamepad and simply re-make the Wii U to be used without it; in favor of the simpler, more "traditional" Pro Controller.

To that, I say niet. In other words: NO!

But why?

Because it's a stupid idea.

And why do you think that?

Because it is.

So what would you rather?

That they continue with it.

WHY?!

Here's why:

The Wii U Gamepad defines Nintendo's new system. It's what sets it a part from all of the other consoles out there. If Nintendo went ahead and re-made the Wii U to only be used with the Pro Controller ~ then the only thing setting it a part from its competitors would be it's first-party exclusives.

Is the Gamepad a true necessity? No, not really. But it is a luxury and an identity card.

Think of the Wii without the Wii Remote, or the DS without the dual-screens. Would they be the same? No, no they wouldn't. Those luxuries made them unique and separated them from the rival systems. Did it put an extra weight on the shoulder of developers? Yes, it did - but when used correctly; the experiences were amazing.

That's the very same case with the Wii U and the Gamepad.

Yes, it sets it a part from the rival systems and creates an extra obstacle for the developers to overcome; but it's up to them to make good use of it. Some have already done it quite well.

- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- ZombiU
- Lego City: UNDERCOVER
- Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate
- Need for Speed: Most Wanted U
- Sonic & All Stars: Racing Transformed
- Nintendo Land
- Batman: Arkham City - ARMORED EDITION
- The Wonderful 101
- Splinter Cell: Blacklist
- Rayman Legends
- Wii Fit U

...are some examples of games that have used the Gamepad in some pretty neat ways. Of course, the list looks a little thin, but hey - the system is only a year old.

My point is: Nintendo taking the Gamepad out of the Wii U's equation would be detrimental, asinine, crazy. It's what defines the system and makes it unique. In my personal experience - I have to say: I love it. It's not only an incredibly comfortable controller, but the touchscreen makes navigation a breeze. All of the extra features it includes also make it more enjoyable. Playing a local multiplayer game with a screen all to yourself is pure gold, and makes those times of having to share one screen seem so primitive and restricted. All-in-all, I think it's a great controller and easily one of the best controllers, if not the best controller I've ever used.

In my eyes, it's not a hindrance, but as I said before - a luxury. Besides; the other guys are embracing the second-screen experience too. PS4 + Vita? XBOX SmartGlass? Companion-Apps? Forgot about them, huh? The main difference between those and Wii U - is that they're external ~ while Wii U is INTEGRATED with it.
